Tasty Tuesday: Decedent Chocolate Layer Cake

This cake is a favorite in my family. My mom usually makes it for my brothers' birthdays.  We celebrated my brother and sister-in-law's birthday yesterday, so I volunteered to make the cake.  My other brother was so excited he cut into the cake before we sang to them!  That is why the cake is already cut in this picture.

Decedent Chocolate Layer Cake
1 Devil's Food or Chocolate Fudge cake mix
1 pint whipping cream
3 tsp sugar
8 oz Baker's German Chocolate Squares
1/4 cup butter
Handful of chocolate chips or grated chocolate

Prepare cake mix according to package instructions.  Bakes in two round cake pans.  Let cool for 10 minutes after they are finished baking.  Cut round, fluffy part off top of cake to make perfectly flat.  Place both round cakes on a plate and cover with wax paper and place in freezer.  Once frozen, remove from oven and cut each cake in half horizontally.  You will now have four round cakes.  Melt german chocolate squares and butter on low heat, stirring constantly.  Whip the cream and add sugar.  Place 1/4 of melted chocolate mixture on one of the cake pieces and spread evenly.  Place in freezer for a minute until chocolate sauce harden and then place whipped cream on top of cake.  Place the second cake piece on top of the whipped cream.  Repeat procedure.  Spread chocolate.  Freeze.  Add whipped cream.  On the top of the cake after the whipped cream is spread sprinkle with chocolate chips or grated chocolate.  You may garnish with a sprig of mint.  Enjoy.  This dessert is heavenly!
