Making an Airplane Cake

For my husband's big 3-0 birthday, I made him an airplane cake since he is crazy about airplanes. There are all kinds of fun ideas online they even make airplane cake molds, but I created my cake using a standard 13"x9" cake pan. I made a homemade cake, since they are firmer but you could use a cake mix. If you are using a cake mix, you'll definitely want to make two frosting layers. The first layer as a base to hold in all the crumbs and the second layer for the "looks" of the cake, so to speak. Check out my frosting recipe below.

Butter cream frosting

4 cups powdered sugar
1 cup softened butter
1 tsp vanilla

Mix above ingredients until smooth and creamy. If mixture seems too runny, simply add more powdered sugar. If too thick, add a bit of water. Add food coloring to frosting to make it desired color.

Once your 13"x9" cake is baked and cooled, follow the diagrams below to cut and assemble your airplane cake. Click on the photos for a closer view. Have fun!

  1. Bravo! I'm very impressed with your cakes. I have 2 birthdays in September and am completely stumped. My son wants an Indiana Jones/Pirate/Spiderman birthday.

  2. Erika, this is great! I am going to make a Rocket from Little Einsteins cake for Dakin's birthday, and I have been looking for a cake recipe that would hold up. Care to share yours?
